the last few days have been hot.
here in sf we are used to a cooler climate and don’t have any air conditioning. when you are a super fuzzy german shepherd with some husky thrown in the mix, you get hot. here are some of my favorite things to do to cool down.
- fort funston. i love to go here on a hot day. even if the fog is out there is always a cool pacific breeze. when the fog comes in it comes here first. make sure your people bring a coat. sometimes it can get very cold, very fast when the fog comes in. most people are not fuzzy enough to take it.
- chrissy field. okay, you all know this is my favorite place. i am not a big fan of waves, so i like to get in the water here. it has little beaches where a dog can really relax and stay cool.
- frosty paws. i found out about these last year. just a note to the people reading - you can takes these with you to chrissy field. yum.
- take a bath. many of you dogs and cats are cringing right now, but i like to take a bath. i get in the shower with my people and the put the soap on and give me a good rub down and rinse. my coat stays wet for a long time and i feel really good. plus i get extra love once i am dry.
- find some trees. when you think of san francisco, you may not think there are forest areas nearby, but there are some great ones. there are still redwood groves and great places for dogs to chill. my favorite places are mt. tamalpais and mendocino county. if you can’t get out of town, there is always golden gate park - trees and grass in one place.

summer always reminds me of vacations and road trips, which reminds me of visiting places dogs aren’t always supposed to go.
we moved to san francisco about 14 years ago near the end of summer. we moved in a u-haul truck pulling my first car. honestly, i would have rather been riding in the car, but i was really glad to be with my stuff and not be left behind.
my people made a bit of a vacation out of the whole thing and stopped in many places along the way. one of those places was the hoover dam. if you have never been there, i highly recommend it, although i really shouldn’t as they don’t take dogs.
when we got there there were signs posted that said that had a picture of a dog with a line through it. i have since learned in my life that this means they don’t take dogs. so, my people parked the truck and my dad went to look at the dam. my mom waited with me in the truck. when he finished walking on the dam he came back so that we could go. they saw the signs, but it was hot and i needed to stretch my legs, so my mom and i decided to make it a quick walk on the dam. my dad would meet us in the truck at the other end.
i was so happy to hear the water and walk on the dam. it is very, very, very big. as we were walking briskly a big voice came over a loudspeaker and said, ‘you with the dog on the dam.’ then the big voice said it again. only this time he said, ‘you with the dog on the dam, get the dog off the dam.’ we started walking faster. and the voice said again, ‘get the dog off the dam.’
we had to turn and walk quickly to my dad in the u-haul truck which was driving by to pick us up. my dad was laughing so hard he almost couldn’t drive. my mom was laughing too, although she was a little embarrassed because everyone on the dam was looking at us.
i still can’t believe they noticed my on that big dam.

have i mentioned that i love going for a drive? that’s right, i think i have.
well i just wanted to remark on the efficiency of automatic windows. in years past, my cars have had windows that my people had to work. but these days, all i have to do is go up to the window and it rolls right down. once i stick my head out, it automatically adjusts so that my collar doesn’t bang on it and make noise. when the car gets going fast, the window automatically rolls up for safety.
sometmes the windows can have problems where they don’t roll down fast enough or take too long to start working. when this happens i just give a little cry and the windows hear me and start to work.
got to love modern technology.
