have i mentioned that i love going for a drive? that’s right, i think i have.
well i just wanted to remark on the efficiency of automatic windows. in years past, my cars have had windows that my people had to work. but these days, all i have to do is go up to the window and it rolls right down. once i stick my head out, it automatically adjusts so that my collar doesn’t bang on it and make noise. when the car gets going fast, the window automatically rolls up for safety.
sometmes the windows can have problems where they don’t roll down fast enough or take too long to start working. when this happens i just give a little cry and the windows hear me and start to work.
got to love modern technology.

birds like to get away, every now and then.
when my people have to leave town for more than a couple of days, they take me up north to ukiah to stay with gary and his other birds. gary used to live in the city with his 50 pigeons, give or take a few. we first met him when he was referred to us by animal care and control as the pigeon guru of the pacific. gary turned my people on to lots of good stuff for me and has let me stay in one of his pigeon lofts from time to time.
i have met a lot of different pigeons at gary’s place. he has a diverse crowd, from carneaus to jacobins to rock doves like me. i usually stay in the loft with the more seasoned pigeons. they have seen it all and are not nearly as feisty as the other birds. all together, they are a very chill crowd to hang with. we don’t get to fly like the other birds in the other lofts, but with all of the hawks around, that’s fine by me.
i did have to learn a few things when i first came here. at home i have my own cage and eat as i please. my people say that i am picky, but i just know what i like. i can’t help it if i have taste. at gary’s place we eat at set times and it is every bird for himself. if you don’t get in right away, you may be left with nothing but corn. of course, the best safflower and peas go first. however, if you are the new guy, you must not overstep your bounds. i learned that the hard way. ouch.
the other thing about gary’s place is that we all share the loft and it is outside. it’s well protected, but i had never really slept anywhere that wasn’t vacuumed every week and temperature controlled. also, there are no comforters or hardwood floors here. oh yeah - there are no lights. you get up and go to bed with the sun.
my people say it is has taught me how to be a bird. i am not sure what they mean, because it has really only taught me about roughing it in the country.
that’s why i call it ‘birdy dude ranch’

ah, it’ that time again - the 4th of july.
ripi spends the day giving off his one time warnings when he hears the little stuff go off. but i know what today is. i am no fool.
today is the day when i hear the booms and hisses around my block. tonight i will see the crazy fireworks show. some of it on my block, and some from the show on the bay. i like the homey feel of the local show, but the one on the bay is the one to see.
my favorite part, of course, is the people. i have noticed that not many dogs go, so i get more of the love. i like the fireworks fine, as i have been going since i was little, except for the ones that come down over your head and spread out. when those happen, my people cover my eyes. thank you people.
when we lived near duboce park and in the western addition, my people used to take me on the 22 fillmore to the marina. yes, dogs can ride the bus if they have a muzzle. i wear it to get on, but i move it to the side when i am in my seat and riding. i am very chill, so of course, i get lots of love from the people around me.
after the show, we would walk through north beach and i would in sit with my people and get a late night dinner, as there are are lots of tables outside. then we might walk to market and take the underground or walk home.
it’s a long night, but always a good adventure.
some dogs like the 4th of july.
