staying in motels and hotels

i love being on the road, seeing new things, smelling all the great smells and driving with my head out the window.

i have been all around the southwest and west coast - new mexico, arizona, colorado, utah, nevada, california, oregon, washington and even vancouver. yes, i have stayed in a hotel in vancouver, british columbia. let me tell you, they have some great parks there.

one of my favorite things is staying in motels, hotels and b + b’s. i love the special attention on the elevators and in the lobby. once we stayed in a hotel in ely, nevada that had taxidermy and slot machines all over the place. that freaked me out.

i really get a bark out of surprising the room service people. i never get to surprise the housekeepers as i am usually out when they come. however, i do get to surprise the room service attendants on a regular basis. my people don’t let me answer the door, but i can still get one quick bark in to let them know i am there. by their looks, i don’t think a lot of dogs order room service.

the most love i get is at bed and breakfasts. since they are very homey, i can roam around a bit and hang out to maximize my belly rub potential. my favorite bed and breakfast is cinnamon morning in albuquerque, new mexico. they had dogs and some parrots there to hang out with. too bad my parents aren’t morning people - i missed some key breakfast tidbits.

so yes, dogs do like to stay in nice digs on the road.

dogs in san francisco

my people were talking about an article in the sf chronicle that talks about dogs in san francisco. they said the article confirmed that this is one of the most dog friendly cities. they also tell me that about paris, but it is too far for me to go there. must be a nice place if people love dogs so much.

let me tell you, san francisco is great for dogs. lots of stores let you in - even if you are a big dog. we went to the apple store a few months ago and i met a great dane that was gigantic. well, he was to me anyway. there he was shopping for computers. my people keep teasing about get me a ‘paw pilot’ - though i have to admit, i have never seen one.

as i was saying, this is a great town to be a dog. people that own stores leave out dog bowls and the retaurants and bars are great. places i have eaten [outside, of course] : la mediterranee [my own personal water bowl brought to my table], java house [the owner gives me some snacks, sometimes], left at albuquerque, cafe neibaum coppola, calzones, kate o’briens, squat and gobble, whiz burger, care abir and atlas cafe. some places even have special hooks out front for my people to hitch me up. at amoeba records, they give me a dog biscuit when i walk in the door!

and the pet stores are great. lots of them put the treats in low bins and tubs so that you can browse at your leisure. i haven’t found a bad one yet. sure, i have may favorites. you can see a few under links, but that is a whole review for another day.

it’s good to be a dog.

duboce park

duboce park was my first park when i moved here.

to be honest, i was less that a year old and fresh from new mexico and had no idea what a dog park was all about. nor did i have any idea what urban life would be like.

my first time to duboce was crazy. i had never seen so many dogs in one place. i went wild - barking like crazy as i ran laps around the other dogs that were hanging out. it was insane. there must have been at least 40 dogs there.

so that was my intro to duboce park. it’s been over 13 years and i don’t live in the neighborhood anymore, but my people still include it on my route. i try to make an appearance once a week. we call it my ‘old duboce’.

once ripi took off and my people couldn’t find him. he showed up a couple of days later at duboce trying to land on the people and dogs. luckily a neighbor called animal control and we got him back. but that is another story for another day.

so if you ever want to chill in a great dog park with laid back dogs and laid back people, check it out.
